A VIEW OF UGANDA AND OUR
MINISTRY GOALS:
Uganda is often held as a model
for Africa in the fight against HIV & AIDS. Situated in the East
African region, Uganda is bordered by Congo to the West, Kenya
to the east, and Sudan to the north and Tanzania to the south.
Partly good governance, effective public education and
sensitization campaigns like: A (abstinence). B (be faithful). C
(condom use), strategies have contributed to a decline in the
number of people living with HIV/AIDS.
Although there is a lot to learn
from Uganda’s comprehensive and timely campaign against the AIDS
epidemic, emphasizing Uganda’s success story must not detract us
from the devastating consequences that AIDS continues to have
across the country: personally, socially and economically. It’s
estimated that 940,000 people are currently living with HIV in
Uganda, and a further 1.2 million children who have been
orphaned by AIDS.
The HIV was first voiced in the early 1980`s in an area called
Rakia district, one of the border towns of Uganda with Tanzania.
The current prevalence rate in Uganda is 6.4% especially
predominant on border areas and landing sites. Its impact has
been felt countrywide especially among the youth and young
adults (ages 15-45) who happen to be the work force.
In the countryside, entire communities have been left as ghost
areas with huge expanses of property and huts un occupied
because the inhabitants died leaving very young siblings and the
elderly who are practically unable to fend for themselves, least
to say till the land. This has posed an immense challenge in the
HIV/AIDS response to us a nation and our church in particular
since these persons live in our community and attend our church,
a ratio of one in every ten persons you meet. It’s also
unfortunate that in many communities, they are often segregated
against and stigmatized; given their status.
As a church, God
has called and given us a deep conviction AND “Jesus-burden” to
reach out into these our neighborhoods and communities targeting
homeless and orphaned children, youths on streets with drug
related problems, single parents especially mothers all of whom
are by-products of the HIV/AIDS and previous wars; as we help
offer Care (nutritional and emotional support), Advocacy
(standing up for their rights against stigma and
discrimination), Prevention (sensitization education) AND
Spiritual support (counseling and prayer). Our ultimate goal is
setting up a Community Center:
A COMMUNITY
CENTER. A place where different
programs will be conducted stretching from Counseling services,
Sensitization-workshops (about HIV/AIDS), Advocacy programs
(against discriminating those living with HIV/AIDS),
Psychosocial programs (how to go on with life after infection)
and setting up an Orphanage home. Spiritual programs involving
outreaches campaigns, deliverance and worship services,
seminars/ conferences for spiritual growth;
Educational/Recreational programs involving setting up a
nursery/elementary school for the younger children, enhancing
sports and games to get their minds and bodies in shape; while
using this as a tool to further our out-reach programs;
targeting most especially the vulnerable youths in the
community.
Therefore the
need to complete our Church building Project AND purchase some
of the neighboring land will greatly help accommodate the above
goals. Notwithstanding, the church is already engaged in some of
these activities on a smaller scale as it prayerfully looks to
God for provision. We solicit your earnest prayers for this
kingdom cause.
1. We periodically
reach out into different neighborhoods of our community
distributing food and clothing through what we call
"food-clinics."
2. Conduct monthly
evangelistic campaigns in hospitals, schools and prisons through
drama groups and music…going along with persons with previous
life abuses and cases of divine intervention from the
HIV/AIDS…who share their testimonies and experiences.
3. Every December, we
hold a Children’s Christmas party where families and
homes come together in songs, skits, drama, etc…with Christ’s
message. We purposely target disadvantaged children, orphaned
youths and the un-churched. We prepare a big meal for them.
However, we do have orphans that we house and feed in believers
homes.
4. We conduct teaching
and training events for our members and ministers through
"Minister's Camp Meetings" AND Worship Conferences running
annually in our church premises. Our emphases are discipleship
training, empowering and releasing the saints to do the work of
ministry AND go the harvest fields.
5. We have initiated,
facilitated and encouraged small scale income generating
projects among a cross section of our congregation to help
provide a minimal income for sustenance. Especially among the
youth; through projects like brick making, basket making,
pottery and poultry breeding.
6. We have a sister
relating church about 30 KM outside the City Center. Annually we
reach out and help conduct a 3 to 5 day evangelistic campaign
and seminar. We minister to that community through the word and
items we have collected as a church to distribute there. We
strongly encourage our upcoming leaders AND church ministers to
be part of this outreach. |
